Hindu Mission Hospital, Tambaram, performed its second successful Kidney transplantation and its first successful cadaveric Kidney transplantation last week. The patient is well and has since been discharged.
The 300 bed Hindu Mission Hospital is licensed to perform Heart, Lung, Liver, Kidney, and Corneal transplants. The Hindu Mission Hospital is Multi Speciality Quaternary Care Institution serving the under priveleged section of the society for 40 years.
The entire process started last week with a call from another hospital through Transplant Authority of Tamilnadu. The team 6 specialists led by Medical Director Dr D K Sriram swung into action at once when the Kidney became available from a brain-dead road traffic accident victim. Within 12 hours of the first telephone call and 3 hours of the organ retrieval the surgery to transplant the kidney into 38-year-old gentlemen on long term dialysis was completed.
This procedure took 7 hours and ensured that the patient stopped being dialysis dependent and now has a quality of life that would allow him to contribute to society positively.
Dr Sriram added ,we sincerely hope that in due time we will be able to perform more transplant surgeries. Transplantation of organs is one of the highest and most gratifying forms of Medical/Surgical management that a hospital can be involved in.
