54-Year-Old International Footballer undergoes successful Advanced Knee Replacement Surgery at MGM Malar – Adyar

Chennai, November 27, 2024: MGM Malar Adyar, a part of MGM Healthcare, today announced the successful completion of a total knee replacement surgery on Mr. Richard Towa, a 54-year-old international footballer from Cameroon and the current manager of Colombe Sportive du Dja et Lobo; he was also the former coach of Kerala FC.

Mr. Richard Towa is a former professional footballer and respected coach, known for his exceptional skills on the field. He visited MGM Healthcare Malar Adyar with a history of unbearable knee pain over the past six months. He was also facing difficulties in performing day-to-day tasks and had a deformed right knee. This was severely limiting his mobility and quality of life. A comprehensive evaluation with X-rays and clinical assessments revealed advanced joint destruction, which needed immediate surgical intervention. The patient was suffering from severe grade IV osteoarthritis in the right knee. Dr. Nandkumar Sundaram, Senior Consultant, Orthopaedics, MGM Malar – Adyar and his team performed the right knee replacement on 7th November 2024.

Knee injuries are one of the most common health issues among football players caused by the intense nature of the game, which requires quick turns, running, jumping, kicking, and sudden changes in direction. These stresses can lead to strains and injuries in the structures of the knee joint, including ligaments, meniscus, tendons, and other soft tissues. Football, as a high-contact sport, inherently carries a significant risk of various injuries, particularly to the knees.

Dr. Nandkumar Sundaram said, “The prevalence of knee injuries, such as ACL, MCL, and meniscus tears, underscores the importance of effective prevention strategies. The importance of the knee joint for footballers is fundamental. Football is a contact sport that requires agility, relying on running, jumping, kicking, and rapid changes of direction. All of these activities place considerable stress on the knee joint, which, combined with the high intensity of the game, can lead to both minor and serious injuries that can affect a player’s career.”

“In Mr. Richard Towa’s case, the advanced Grade IV osteoarthritis had led to significant pain and deformity, where even performing basic day-to-day tasks became a challenge. Our aim was not just to alleviate pain but also to restore regular mobility, enabling him to regain his independence and resume his day-to-day activities without limitations. The surgery involved removing damaged tissue and bone growths, precisely shaping the thigh and shin bones, and implanting stabilized knee components secured with cement. The procedure was done using a minimally invasive technique through the front of the knee, ensuring better joint stability and improved mobility for his recovery, he added.

Mr. Towa’s surgery was a key step in restoring his mobility and joint function, ensuring he can continue his active lifestyle and coaching career. With our advanced surgical techniques and expert care, we are proud to have played a part in his recovery and look forward to seeing him back on his feet coaching his team in Cameroon.

Commenting on his experience at MGM Malar-Adyar, Mr. Richard Towa said, “With the problem I was facing with my right knee, I never thought that I would ever be able to go back to my action-packed routine. This somewhat had begun to dampen my spirits. I must admit that MGM Malar-Adyar played a major role in bringing a lot of positivity within me. Through their state-of-the-art treatment and, most importantly, with the regular counseling that they provided. I am extremely thankful to the Management at MGM, Dr. Nandakumar Sundaram, and his team for helping me regain my mobility…without any pull or pain.”
