Tiruchirappalli, July 2026: Rela Hospital, one of India’s leading centres for liver disease management and transplantation, inaugurated its new facility in the city. The centre, operating from Shweta Speciality Hospital, will provide comprehensive care for liver and digestive disorders. Its services will be expanded in phases to include a liver transplant programme, offering both living donor and cadaver donor liver transplants, along with advanced liver and gastrointestinal cancer surgeries.
Prof. Mohamed Rela, Chairman of Rela Hospitals Group, inaugurated the facility in the presence of Dr. S.N.K. Chenduran, Founder of Shweta Speciality Hospital, and a medical gastroenterologist trained at Rela Hospitals, Chennai. Senior clinicians and members of the leadership teams from Rela Hospital and Shweta Speciality Hospital also attended the event.
More than 50 liver transplant recipients from Tiruchirappalli and the Delta region, who underwent transplantation at Rela Hospital, Chennai, participated in the event and shared their recovery journeys and life after liver transplantation. As part of the inauguration, Rela Hospital offers free consultations until the end of this month, by prior appointment. Appointments can be booked by calling 8925872235.
The facility features a dedicated 14-bed unit for liver care, specialised ICU and HDU facilities for complex liver conditions, and modern operation theatres. Its gastroenterology services include a state-of-the-art endoscopy suite with a unit for Third Space Endoscopy, a cutting-edge, scar-free technique that enables doctors to treat complex digestive disorders from inside the wall of the digestive tract, avoiding the need for conventional surgery in many cases. The hospital also houses an Advanced Gynaecology and Laparoscopic Centre of Excellence for minimally invasive surgical care.
The liver care programme at the Trichy facility will be mentored by Prof. Mohamed Rela, and a senior multidisciplinary team from Rela Hospital. The medical hepatology and medical gastroenterology team will be led by Dr. Dinesh Jothimani, Dr. S.N.K. Chenduran, and Dr. Navin Kumar Marannan.
In his comments, Prof. Mohamed Rela said, “A significant number of patients from Tiruchirappalli and the surrounding districts currently travel to Chennai for specialised liver and gastrointestinal care. Unfortunately, many reach us when their disease is already at an advanced stage, limiting treatment options and affecting outcomes. Through Rela Hospitals Trichy, our objective is to provide world-class liver and gastro care closer to home. We aim to diagnose diseases at an early stage and offer comprehensive treatment, including medical management, advanced surgeries, and liver transplantation, thereby improving patient outcomes and saving more lives.”
In his comments, Dr. S.N.K. Chenduran said, “With the launch of the facility, we are bringing the expertise of Rela Hospital and the team led by Prof. Mohamed Rela closer to patients in the region. In other words, Rela Hospital Trichy will deliver the same high standards of liver and gastroenterology care that patients have come to expect from Rela Hospital in Chennai. Patients can now access specialist consultations, evaluation, medical management, and long-term post-transplant follow-up locally. This model will significantly reduce the burden of travel and ensure continuity of care for patients from Trichy, the Delta region, and neighboring districts.
Under the leadership of Prof. Mohamed Rela, one of the world’s foremost liver transplant surgeons, Rela Hospital has performed more than 2,000 liver transplants since 2019. Prof. Mohamed Rela has personally performed over 6,000 liver transplants in his career and is internationally renowned for performing the liver transplant on a five-day-old infant.
Rela Hospital’s liver transplant programme has also been recognised by the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN) for its excellence liver transplantation and its contribution to expanding access to life-saving transplant care.
